The Apothecary - A place to find natural products and remedies

Usually vitriolic, at times bellicose; I'm not here to be nice

A weekly challenge from Reduce Footprints blog. I try to participate weekly.

Each Friday, something to think about

A walk on the natural side each Sunday (or Monday...)

So how have we gotten so far off course? When the label of ‘green’ was introduced, it was seen as a mission statement; something that would entitle the customer to some sense of comfort that they product they were supporting (which was usually more expensive) was working with the Earth’s best interests at heart. Instead we have simply completed a full consumerist revolution; the label has been taken, assigned a cultural identity and used to sell a piece of a lifestyle that is intended to speak more to your peers than to subsidize an environmental commitment.

I can’t believe they’re saying it’s safe to drink. There is a significant amount of Methane in that water.

I recently saw an interesting movie, Promised Land. Rather than argue for or against Fracking, it focused on why it’s such a controversial practice … namely that poor, rural communities are being targeted with the promise of big profits. Of course the companies claim that the practice is totally safe which we now know is not true. It highlights a problem that we see worldwide … when the choice is between environmental health (and ours) and lifting a family out of poverty, it becomes muddied. Of course, that’s exactly why these communities are targeted. It’s also why we need to educate ourselves about these things.

>SF, yes, I’ve heard about this movie, not seen it. But exposing the principles is a good idea. This is exactly the same as evangelical churches targeting people with a lower education, because they are the most likely to be swayed. The strong target the weak at every turn in life.
