Nature Ramble

Off to South Georgia in the southern Altantic Ocean this week.

One of the most ungainly creatures of the sea would have to include elephant seals.

The northern elephant seal, somewhat smaller than its southern relative, ranges over the Pacific coast of the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The most northerly breeding location on the Pacific Coast is at the southern tip of Vancouver Island.

The southern elephant seal is found in the Southern Hemisphere on islands such as South Georgia and Macquarie Island, and on the coasts of New Zealand, South Africa, and Argentina in the Peninsula Valdés, which is the fourth-largest elephant seal colony in the world.Wikipedia

Southern elephant seal bulls typically reaching reach a length of 16 ft (4.9 m) and a weight of 6,600 lb (3,000 kg), and are much larger than the cows.

  1. Crikey! I’d forgotten just how massive these creatures are! They are like the Sumo wrestlers of the Ocean. I loved the sound of the cameras madly clicking in the background – I bet they got some great stills.

They are pretty fine though but I’d wouldn’t want to get too close. The film was great, just the right distance away to feel safe 🙂
