Today we’re going nuts!
Almonds to be exact.
Where do they come from?
The supermarket…
Nice try, but before the supermarket.
They come from a shell
And before the shell…
Green almond pods
And the pods grow on trees…
And the trees have beautiful blossoms.
That’s where almonds come from!

So how have we gotten so far off course? When the label of ‘green’ was introduced, it was seen as a mission statement; something that would entitle the customer to some sense of comfort that they product they were supporting (which was usually more expensive) was working with the Earth’s best interests at heart. Instead we have simply completed a full consumerist revolution; the label has been taken, assigned a cultural identity and used to sell a piece of a lifestyle that is intended to speak more to your peers than to subsidize an environmental commitment.

lots and lots of them come from central and Northern California. nut crops are heavy users of irrigated water. many nut orchards here are being replaced with other crops requiring less water. more grey water usage is in the works. as a kid,
my dad worked in the almond orchard of a friend’s family. he always called them amins. a as in cat and a silent l.

yes, unless you’ve seen them in their husks you wouldn’t know! here I can order green walnuts in their husks. I remove the husks and use them for dyeing fabric a rich brown color.
